A Force-Sensing Surgical Bipolar Forceps
A sensorized surgical bipolar forceps, the SmartForceps allows for real time record, display and monitor of forces of tool-tissue interaction during surgery. The technology, for the first time, provides the ability of measuring forces of tool-tissue interaction during surgery, increasing the safety of surgery.
Recipient of multiple peer reviewed grants (the German Canadian Centre of Innovation and Research) and Canadian Institutes for health Research (CIHR – for Project neuroArm, University of Calgary), the technology with several high impact scientific publications and a patent pending, has Health Canada Application in place, and is being trialed at the Foothills Medical Centre under the University of Calgary institutional research ethics approval. Product launch for wider adoption is anticipated soon.
