Our History

OrbSurgical Ltd. is a Canadian spinoff that brings together a team of talented surgeons, engineers and scientists from Project neuroArm – University of Calgary. Through its ties to Canadian space exploration – International Space Station endeavours (Canadarm, Canadarm2, Dextre) and translation of space technology to earth applications for human health, neuroArm – an image-guided MR compatible neurosurgical robot was created. neuroArm, a remotely operated telerobotic platform, represents a successful collaboration between Garnette Sutherland, Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Calgary, and Macdonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), Brampton, ON, Canada, and remains a game-changer in contemporary neurosurgery, altering the way surgery is performed in the 21st century.

Orb Surgical forms an ideal blend of our history and connection with space robotics and our ongoing endeavours in medical robotics, surgical simulation and diagnostics to create innovative solutions for operating rooms and patients around the world (and beyond!).

Led by world-renowned neurosurgeon, visionary and innovator Garnette Sutherland (C.M., M.D., F.R.C.S), CEO and his engineering counterpart Kourosh Zareinia (PhD, PEng), CTO, OrbSurgical is a model conduit to deliver the best of medicine and technology into the global market.
